Hello there ๐
The other day I wanted to backup some data, so normally I keep backups on cloud as well as my Hard disk (HDD). I Plugged in the HDD and guess what? It couldn’t read. The data had been corrupted, which really sucks! Which brings me to today’s topic, Data Storage.
How do you store your data?
Now, I believe we all approach this in various ways based on, volume of data, type of data, frequency of access to the data, the generation we are in, as well as exposure to technology. The most common ways of data storage are external storage devices such as a memory card, flash disk or hard disk. Cloud storage is also common especially Google Drive, and just incase you are not on it, you should consider it seriously. There are more options for cloud storage such as Microsoft OneDrive, DropBox, Amazon aws , IBM Cloud among others.
External storage devices are great upto a certain point, reason being in my case my data got corrupted – that means I lost it all, which was really not my intention. Other scenarios; they can get lost since they are hardware (physical) and furthermore can get physically damaged. I don’t feel terrible about the data, since I had backed it up on cloud,so in actual sense I just lost the hardware – mind you those devices are not cheap ๐
Cloud storage these days is actually quite affordable when you think about it. Lets look at Google drive for example, they charge 200/= in my currency(KSH) for 100GB of cloud storage monthly. Which is a lot of storage depending on what information you store. Best part about Cloud Storage is you can access it from anywhere, using any device as long as you are connected to the internet. Absolutely amazing yeah!
Another option is having your own servers. Which unless you are running a company or as an individual you deal with a tonne of data, then there’s no need. By a tonne of data, I mean over 100TB of data since these days your regular laptop can hold at least 500GB – 2TB of data.
Benefit of servers; you own your data, and are fully responsible for it – No third parties involved. Plus you can setup according to how you prefer, no limitations. Only drawback is you require a server guru – for setup and maintenance purposes – since they are not your regular kind of computers. Which means running costs are high, thus an expensive option.
Anyway which option would you go for or do you use? Personally I prefer cloud however I am working on building my own server space. But first, a custom computer is the objective. Liquid cooled, insane processing power, at least 10TB of storage, among other components. Check this desktop setup. FUN!
Got to go… PS: BACK UP WEEKLY ATLEAST! – computer data & your chats.
Thank me later. Cheers…
Great article.
Asante… remember to backup ๐
Informative!
Thank you… more to come ๐
