What is Data? Organized information that is useful.
-In computing, data is information that has been translated into a form that is efficient for movement or processing.(Source: Techtarget)
With the world evolving faster everyday, there is so much data we collect on a daily basis. I mean think about it…lets start with the basics. Your phone can record the amount of steps you take daily and it can be linked to an IOT device that is your smart band. It gives you information such as calories burnt, kms covered, steps done etc, depending on your health goals.
Pick another scenario, you go online and check your feed. A bunch of information is presented to you based on your preferences and interests. The online community comes up with this thru’ collecting data about you and categorizing you based on what you post, share, circle of friends, age, location and so much more.
I’ve been carried away, what point was I driving to? Ooh yeah, so data will soon have more value than anything. We currently have all sort of devices, equipment, sensors, each with a particular task of telling us; what does the fridge need, hey play me a certain track, what route to use today, what to wear based on weather patterns, what to eat, and a lot more. Data is definitely affecting our way of life not only at work but also in our own personal lives.
Is it a good thing? Don’t you think its a bit intrusive? Does it mean we can’t make the decisions ourselves?
The brain is wired the same way. We observe, contemplate, process and make a decision based on this data we’ve collected.I would suggest we learn more about Data and what it can do besides what we are used to. I think the applications are dumbfounding!!
Finally, I’ll be doing a data-series to elaborate more. I wonder what the next topic will be? Hmmm… data storage?, data sharing & transfer? – leave a comment with suggestions or thoughts 🙂
I will leave you with a quote,
In God we trust, all others bring data. — W. Edwards Deming
